Agency and Independence in Aging

Key Takeaways

  • Agency and independence are not the same, agency is about decision-making, while independence is about ability
  • Even when independence declines, maintaining agency is essential to dignity and personhood
  • In senior living, involving residents in decisions supports emotional well-being and quality of life
  • Person-centered care should prioritize choice, autonomy, and respect at every stage of aging

This is new to me. I sit open the board for a public company in the senior living and long term care sector. After the meeting, one of my colleagues and I had an interesting discussion.

What Is Agency vs. Independence?

It started when I asked her what was most important to her in thoughts about aging. She answered me with a single word, “agency”. I looked at her and said yes, I agree independence is important.

But she responded, “agency and independence are not the same thing. Independence is being able to do things for and by yourself while agency is the right to make your own decisions”.

Why Agency Matters in Senior Living

Think about that. You can have agency and independence but when you can no longer be independent, having agency is critical. Being able to be part of decision making even when you need to accept assistance is about dignity; it assures personhood.

Supporting Dignity and Decision-Making in Older Adults

Understanding this must be fundamental to each of us working with older adults. Quality of life can be maintained in many ways. At the end of the day or at the end of our days, having agency may be the greatest gift we can get.

How Juniper Supports Agency in Senior Living

At Juniper, supporting agency is at the core of how care is delivered. Through personalized care plans, resident-centered programming, and a strong focus on choice and autonomy, residents are encouraged to remain active participants in their daily lives and decisions.

Personalized Care Plans and Resident Choice

This includes having a say in daily routines, dining preferences, social activities, and how care is received ensuring that each individual’s lifestyle, values, and preferences are honored.

A Person-Centered Approach to Evolving Care Needs

Juniper’s approach to person-centered care recognizes that needs may change over time, but a person’s voice should never be diminished. Team members work closely with residents and families to adapt care in a way that continues to respect individual choice, whether that means offering flexible schedules, creating meaningful engagement opportunities, or supporting decision-making in both small and significant ways.
