On Sunday, August 25, a group of resident garden enthusiasts from Juniper Village at Forest Hills attended the Tomato & Garlic Day Festival.
The event, which is 15 years old, was located on the front lawn of the Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh. The event hosts held a collection drive for produce in support of the greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. In addition to collecting food for a good cause, the festival also featured an afternoon of tastings, cooking demonstrations, “Biggest, Smallest and Ugliest” homegrown tomato contests, and fun kid activities. Of course, the highlight was the farmers’ market that included local vendors selling a wide variety of fresh vegetables, tomato and garlic items, homemade salsas, flavored oils, herbs, fair trade coffees, and honeys.
