The Sensory Outings Company is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, working with people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Their mission is to provide these special people with life enrichment activities that promote self-worth and independence. Their belief is people with Alzheimer’s disease need activities they remember and enjoy.
The residents really enjoy the vast array of Montessori activities such as words & numbers, maps & countries, arts & crafts and so much more. Activities more geared toward the men are nuts & bolts, pipes & tubes, tool matching, sanding, poker chips sorting. Women on the other hand tend to like the loom & weaving, cross stitching, dominoes, color matching, dough & cookies cutters, easel & painting, and flower arranging.
Meghan and her team are continually swapping out various activities to keep the residents focused and happy while still engaged. Today we sorted, matched up game pieces, matched block pieces to the laminated paper, worked through the holes on a sewing card and fitted PVC pipes together. The residents are challenged at the end of their session and feel good about their accomplishments. We look forward to next month when Meghan will once again challenge us to fulfilling cognitive type brain drain activities.
