Juniper Village at Williamstown

An Age Old Tradition

On April 26th, Juniper Village at Williamstown celebrated National Pretzel Day by making their very own.

When the German immigrants first started coming to America in the 1700’s, they brought their love of pretzels with them.  Bavarians and other southern Germans had been enjoying pretzels for hundreds of years and couldn’t leave this tradition behind.  Our residents enjoyed rolling out the dough, forming their very own pretzel shapes and sizes along baking them in the oven.  The aroma of the delicious treat could be smelled throughout the hallways.  When the finished product was nicely golden brown just the right amount of salt was added.  For those residents who grew up in Philadelphia (the pretzel capital of the U.S.) mustard was adorned on top of their homemade pretzel treat.  The residents enjoyed discussing how they could buy a Philadelphia Pretzel for 2 cents when they were in grade school and unless there was mustard on top they wouldn’t eat it.  Before the baking class was over the residents were asking when we could make them again.
