Marie was born in McKeesport, PA in the late 1920s, the daughter of the late Leo and Marie Mullaly, and was one of nine children. She spent her young adulthood in the McKeesport area and completed both elementary and high school there.
Following high school, Marie went to study at Mercy School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. She very proudly graduated and then worked in a variety of positions there. When Mercy Hospital opened a clinic to serve people in the Hill District, Marie was asked by a social worker to work there. Marie’s kindness and compassion as a nurse was richly evident, and even county jail prisoners who received treatment at Mercy experienced her nonjudgmental kindness and concern.
In 1944 Marie became a member of the U.S. World War II Army Cadet Nursing Corp. However, the war ended before she was called to serve overseas.
Marie worked as a nurse on the “preemie” ward at McKeesport Hospital, then eventually worked as the nurse and manager for two doctors whose office was in Gateway Center in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Marie was a good friend to so many, especially her close friends. She traveled often, visiting places such as Ireland, Italy, Spain and Greece, and even took several cruises including one to Alaska! Marie particularly loves the beach!
Her service to others extended outside the hospital as well. She was a Eucharistic Minister at her church and worked on prayer quilts for those who were sick, too.
In her 50s Marie began dating an old beau, Lou Luberti. When she was 57, she and Lou got married. Though she never had children of her own, Marie became the best aunt anyone could wish for! All 13 of her nieces and nephews attest to the fact that Marie was such a wonderful role model – she was generous, faith-filled, loving and fun, and never missed a special occasion! All of these qualities, hands down, make for the congenial woman we are all fortunate to know today.
