Juniper Village at Brookline

Juniper Paints the Capitol Purple!

Over 5.8 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. By the year 2050, it is estimated that number will increase to as much as 14 million, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

As such, it is incredibly important to advocate for adequate funding for research and support for families fighting this devastating disease. The Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM), works to increase awareness, provide education, and advocate for federal support of initiatives which will positively impact the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. June was dedicated by the Senate as National Brain Health Awareness month in Pennsylvania. What better way for us to make an impact on brain health than by advocating for a world without Alzheimer’s disease! This year, members of Juniper Village at Brookline’s leadership team along with past and present family members of residents with dementia, attended an Alzheimer’s advocacy event held at the Capitol building in Harrisburg. While there they attend trainings and informational seminars on the future of Alzheimer’s. They also had the opportunity to meet with local legislators and advocate for policies to support families and research. While meeting with Senator Jake Corman and Representative Kerry Benninghoff, the team told stories of how dementia has impacted their lives and asked their legislators to support current bills on the floor that impact PA’s older adults. Throughout the day, over 90 advocates from across the state met with every legislator.  With approximately 1 in 3 seniors currently suffering from Alzheimer’s or related dementias, according to the Alzheimer’s association, it is vital that we speak up and educate our lawmakers on these important issues.
